Women doctors don’t choose to leave work; they are forced out of their careers

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the women doctors of Pakistan. I was both surprised and humbled by the response. People wrote in to say how it changed their perceptions of the profession and the place of women in it. Others pointed out errors and omissions. By writing about women doctors, I only wanted to tell their stories, to understand their perspectives, and to hopefully start a conversation about the state of the medical profession in Pakistan and its gender dynamics. What I did not expect was that it would lead to an introspection about how we read and perceive research, and what we think about women’s work. There are three main things I would like to bring attention to in order to clarify the research around women doctors: The lack of data on women doctors, the misleading assumption that women have a choice in leaving work, and the definition of work itself.

Pakistan is now energy surplus, says PM Abbasi

KARACHI: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said on Wednesday that the country had become surplus in energy in a short period of four years starting from 2013 when the nation used to face up to 16 hours of loadshedding a day. Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of unit one of the 1,320MW (2x660MW) Port Qasim coal-fired power plant, the prime minister said it was the second largest project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). He said the completion of the power plant in a record period of 30 months at a cost of $2.8 billion was a great achievement on the part of the Port Qasim Electric Power Company Ltd and Private Power and Infrastructure Board. Mr Abbasi said the plant was a symbol of Pakistan-China friendship and a milestone in the CPEC and Al-Mirqab Capital, Qatar. He praised Al-Mirqab Capital chairman Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al-Thani for his cooperation and financial support for the project.

Volcanic 'super-eruptions' more frequent than thought: study

Image
PARIS: The last volcanic "super-eruption" big enough to erase civilisation as we know it happened 25,000 years ago -- but these types of blasts occur every 17,000 years on average, according to a revised calculation out on Wednesday. Up to now, it was assumed that eruptions of this magnitude took place every 50,000 to 700,000 years, according to a study, published in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters. The new estimate establishes a range of 5,000-48,000 years, with the best estimate of these type of eruptions occurring every 17,000 years on average, the lead author Jonathan Rougier told AFP. "We find that super-eruptions -- at least 1,000 billion tonnes of erupted matter -- are much more frequent than previously thought," he said by email. Explosive volcanoes on that scale dramatically lower Earth´s temperatures and could darken skies to the point where most vegetation would struggle to grow. One recent assessment describes them as c...
